Queen Elizabeth I was said to favour its use in her chambers as a strewing herb, the practice of placing herbs and rushes on the floor to give a pleasant aroma and provide warmth. In Wales, it is mentioned in the Mabinogion where the wizards Math and Gwydion create the beautiful woman Blodeuwedd (Flowerface) from the flowers of meadowsweet, broom and oak.
