The ‘Silver Bullet’ in Business

by Holly

I will precursor this, by saying that I’ve lied in the title — there’s no silver bullet in business. I repeat, there’s no silver bullet!

It’s something I have to remind myself of on a daily basis and it’s a lesson which I’ve learnt after many, many (many!) years of believing there was one — there had to be!

One day we need to be on TV with our very own ad campaign, which will bring in more sales. We surely missed the fact we just need to increase our digital marketing spend, to turn things around. Or, if we could get at least three more pieces of press, our footfall would shoot through the roof — surely? Maybe I just need to work more hours, or hire more staff, or less staff…the list goes on in the search.

Every time, I thought ‘this’ is really going to move the dial.

But guess what, it didn’t.

This all might make you want to sigh and ask, “Well why on earth are you writing this Holly?”.  But stick with me.

I’m sharing this hard truth because it’s a lesson which has taken me a long time to learn. In fact, if I’m honest, I’m still training myself to stop searching; perhaps even writing this article is part of my own journey.

My advice, which I hope will stop you making costly mistakes, betting all your chips on X, Y or Z and instead you might take my advice and spread them around for slow, but long-term growth. My dream is to help you have the confidence to know that when an agency is potentially pitching, or someone you’re interviewing or an expert is telling you, “100% this a game changer” that you’ll think of me. Sitting on your shoulder, whispering in your ear, “Remember, there’s no silver bullet!”

At the same time, I need to keep reminding myself that my eternal optimism (on the hunt for the shiny bullet — shhhh!) is a vital ingredient to being a founder. It’s the bright positive spark within us small business owners which sets us on this path to build our dreams in the first place,  where we solve complex issues everyday, thanks to knowing we have what it takes to find solutions.

Keep this optimism bright, it’s a secret fuel so many don’t possess.

My right hand woman and I often laugh to ourselves as we spot something new, and immediately think, right this is ‘IT’.  We then have a talk to ourselves, agree we don’t believe in the silver bullet and that instead, this new idea, is simply one of the crucial building blocks of the dream.

We no longer have silver bullets, we have eternal optimism and that’s not the same thing. When we now see something shiny, we instantly downgrade newness to, at best, bronze bullets. And then just hope it might prove us… wrong.

I told you, you can’t beat a bit of eternal optimism!
