I’m always asked what’s my best business advice I can pass on, and I always say the same thing, “It’s better to have a hole than an arsehole!” So much so, I decided to commission it onto cross stitch, to serve as my faithful reminder.
I’ve been burnt so many times hiring the wrong person. I see it time and time again, when a company goes through growth spurts and they need, NEED that bum on a seat! They often hire in quickly, rather than taking the time to find the right person. Been there and done that.
You know the saying – ‘One bad apple can upset your entire apple cart’. It is utterly true! Company culture suffers immediately and the entire team can become unbalanced. Leading to all sorts of issues. I think that the wrong person, not dealt with quickly can set a company back 3 mths for every 1 mth passed. Think about that, let’s say you’ve got that ‘gut feel’ that things are not right and you leave it 4mths – that will potentially set your business back – 1 whole year! Every 2 days you procrastinate, is a working week lost!
The first thing to look for when searching for a great employee is somebody with a personality that fits with your company culture. Most skills can be learned, but it is difficult to train people, to have a different personality. If you can find people who are fun, friendly, caring and love helping others, or you’d definitely want to go for a drink with after work – then hire them. Introverts are the most incredible employees, but it can be harder to get to know them in a first interview, trust your judgement and use your experience to pull it out of them. Look for their skill, ask them to show you proof of this skill, but also and mostly, look for hunger! Hunger and enough of it, becomes talent!
So, if you are reading this, with that gut feel – deal with it! The longer you don’t, the more damage it will do. The more opportunity and energy you will block, from coming to your precious business.
