A hopeful sign of the times?

Like millions of others, I watched this year's Golden Globes. For me, this year marked a shift, not just in glitzy Hollywood, but in our societies; the rise of feminism. The red carpet was dominated by strong women, standing up for what they believe in. Actresses wore black gowns in support of the Time's Up movement, standing in solidarity with victims of sexual assault and harassment, something we’ve sadly seen far too much of this year.

There was one woman who shined the brightest of all; Oprah. I was completely blown away by her incredible speech, which she gave after accepting the Cecil B DeMille lifetime achievement award; the first black woman to ever receive it.

In the wake off #metoo and Time's Up, Oprah used her speech to take a stand and speak out, as these issues "transcend any culture, geography, race, religion, politics or workplace."

Lots of tingles went down my spine as I listened to her call on women to ‘speak their truth’, saying, “each of us in this room are celebrated because of the stories that we tell, and this year we became the story. I want all the girls watching here, now, to know that a new day is on the horizon. And when that new day finally dawns, it will be because of a lot of magnificent women, many of whom are right here in this room tonight, and some pretty phenomenal men, fighting hard to make sure that they become the leaders who take us to the time when nobody ever has to say 'me too' again."

After a year of so much uncertainty, ignorance, and let’s face it, some scary times concerning red buttons, small hands and even smaller minds, it was so refreshing to hear this strong woman who has experienced discrimination, speak out so powerfully and eloquently. I almost forgot what that sounded like! Since her speech, there’s been a rallying cry for her to be the next president; she’s got my full support!

New York homeware company, @fishseddynyc predicted this back in the summer, and created an Oprah 2020 mug as part of their female empowerment collection. After her speech, it sold out immediately! A positive sign of things to come?
