The Independent Awards 2021

Holly's Fairy Godmother Award Winners

As well as the Category Awards and the People’s Choice Award, this year we had another very special prize, too. For the first year ever, we introduced Holly’s Fairy Godmother Award. This glittery accolade is awarded to businesses Holly feels will most benefit from a little extra wind beneath their wings to get them where they need to go.

Each received a cash prize, thanks to our small business supporters Dell Technologies, NatWest and Royal Mail.

Emma Giacalone Textiles

Thoughtful to the core, Emma creates truly inspiring textiles and cards, designed to uplift. She sews soulful words with skilful stitching to transform everyday items into pieces of art. She describes them as being, “positively inspiring textile items stitched with love, tea, and a custard cream or three.”

Emma is a maker in the truest sense. She innovates daily and thinks so creatively, and just brings such joy to people with her beautiful, thought-provoking pieces. I’m so pleased to give a little joy back.

The Flock

Founder of The Flock, Jennifer, started this brilliant magazine to “genuinely engage with modern, smart, ethically-minded women about the decisions which impact their lives.” On topics as broad as politics, parenting, finance or fashion, the stories and people featured always aim to lead us towards a kinder climate for all.

Few people deserve a helping hand as much as Jennifer. She’s worked for seven days a week since the magazine started to produce something to help society and I hope this money, in turn, helps her keep going as she is incredible.

Sonshine Magazine

This female founded quarterly magazine is designed to help raise boys for an equal world, “to explore the challenges and the joys that come with raising kind, thoughtful and empathetic (as well as loud, boisterous and hilarious) boys.” By changing the way we view boyhood, we can start to change the way they experience manhood.

We’re big supporters of women here but unless we back boys and men too, things won’t change. This is such an incredible idea and I’m thrilled we’re helping hard working Kirstie to get a helping hand, too.

The Kookie Kid

Female founder Avaiyia (AKA The Kookie Kid) is just 13, this is already her second business and she has been featured in Forbes magazine — but she really needs help to buy equipment so she can streamline her orders and turn less people away. Her artfully designed cookies are a sight to behold and just as good to eat. Watch this space as she’s set to go far.

It is so rewarding to meet a 13-year-old who is as driven and passionate as Avaiyia is. She’s so keen to learn and progress, and  works hard to achieve her dreams. I honestly think her future will shine.
