You might think August is the month to relax, sit back and let life pass you by, but any small business knows exactly what August is all about! Thanks to the marvellous and lovely Maggie from XOXO Stationery, we’ve brought to life Aug-anisation. I actually don’t think there’s a room in my house without one of her brilliant personalised pads!

Thank you Maggie for bringing such brilliant organisation to our worlds. Let’s remind ourselves of the top 5 things to think about when writing a ‘to-do list’:

  1. Keep it simple: Your ‘to-do list’ should have no more than three things on it for a given day. Some of the most highly successful people I know only allow one item on their ‘to-do list’ each day. This is where you get to move things forward properly – focus and prioritisation.

  2. Write your ‘to-do list’ the night before: This helps you start your day with clarity. You know exactly which item you need to complete by 10am the next morning.

  3. Tackle the first item on your list first thing: It’s important to be proactive rather than reactive. Complete your most high level, strategic action first, before checking your email or responding to phone calls or other requests. People and technology will always be there to distract you.

  4. Brain dump: If you have a hard time limiting your ‘to-do list’ to a maximum of three items, create a mind dump. Take five minutes, no more, and write down every single thing you can think of that you need to do in the next week. Write it all down just to get it out of your head. Then put that list away as it’s just a psychic release.

  5. Sometimes small is big: Be strategic about your energy. Occasionally, a small or tiny task that isn’t highly strategic will start to take up an incredible amount of mindspace. Sometimes, something small becomes a huge energy suck because we’ve put it off for so long. In this case, it IS one of the three most important things for you to do. You need to unblock.

In July we were July-ing around and as if we’re going from day to night, this month we are getting super organised with Aug-anisation. May the ‘to-do list’ force be with you all.
