Creative Confidence

I am a huge fan of IDEO and have loved reading this book. A little bit more about it – David Kelley and his brother Tom Kelley, IDEO partners and the author of the bestselling The Art of Innovation, have also written a powerful book on unleashing the creativity that lies within each and every one of us.

Companies and individuals assume that creativity and innovation are the domain of the “creative types”, but two of the leading experts in innovation, design, and creativity on the planet show us that each and every one of us is creative.

Such an inspiring read that draws on countless stories from their work at IDEO and with many of the world’s top companies, identify principles and strategies that will allow us to tap into our creative potential in our work lives, and in our personal lives, and allow us to innovate in terms of how we approach and solve problems.

David: “Creative confidence is the natural human ability to come up with breakthrough ideas and the courage to act on them. When people become confident in their own creative ability, it changes everything. Think about how much more positive your life is when you see yourself as a creative person. When you have creative confidence, you can change things. You can do what you set out to do.”

Tom: “You know how some people insist on dividing the world into creative types and non-creative types? I was absolutely, positively, the non-creative type. I got an MBA. I worked in management consulting, where most of the work was done with spreadsheets. Then I came to IDEO, and suddenly I was immersed in a culture in which you’re encouraged to bring your whole self to work, in which people don’t want to suppress the creative side of you.”

When people say ‘I’m not creative,’ in many cases it comes from the misperception that “real creativity” just comes naturally—without any effort. Yet no one, including Mozart, sat down at the piano the first day and wrote sonatas. Right? But until you experiment a little, it’s impossible for you to know what your creative skill is.
