Learn to Lose

Being a small business owner is no easy feat. In fact, it’s an emotional rollercoaster; with the sky highs come dark lows, often right after one another. From feeling indestructible and on top of the world, to feeling defeated, like you’re wading through treacle to try and make the smallest bit of progress. Sound familiar?

I used to say that running NOTHS, and now Holly & Co – is a soap opera. Not one day was ever the same, and just because you had an amazing day yesterday, didn’t mean you could not be dealing with tragedy the next! I found it so emotional and draining at times. You have to learn, to ride this attraction like a pro – or you get eaten up.

But, the beauty of this rollercoaster is that it’s your own. Just as you start to feel like giving up from fighting so hard to climb uphill, suddenly you reach the top and you’re rushing down gleefully; with the wind in your hair and a smile on your face. The lows will teach you to appreciate the highs; losing will teach you how winning works.

Some of the biggest lessons I’ve learnt in this life, are when I’ve been at my lowest. For me, I truly had to hit rock bottom to appreciate my successes – especially the mini milestones, which I think are the most important. Losing – taught me to stop and smell the roses, to appreciate the now, and to look at what I can achieve today. Losing – taught me to trust my gut and listen to myself. If I could go back and give young Holly some advice, it’d be exactly that!
