When I become a little obsessed about someone, nothing can stop me! Emily Sian Hart is a crocheter in Glasgow and I love what she does. A self confessed crazy plant lady, she decided to combine these two interests and began creating a range of crocheted plants! These are made with attention to detail, referencing real cacti and succulents and are suitable for even the worst plant killers! Seeing as the Work/Shop is all about ‘Ideas Growing’ and he shop is a tropical plant oasis, largely thanks to Emily’s products, I decided to ask Emily a few questions:
When did the seed of your business making Crocheted plants start?
I started crocheting in 2015. I thought it would be a nice relaxing way to spend my evenings after work. Since I’m a plant lover, I thought it would be cool to make some crocheted cacti – the plant that is impossible to kill! I made some for myself and for family and friends. I soon got requests through Instagram so decided to open up an online shop. I never set out for this to be a business but couldn’t be happier with the way things worked out!
Can you give any advice for growing your small business? What has worked, what’s been difficult?
I’ve definitely struggled with taking a break at times! It’s easy to put a lot of pressure on yourself when you’re running your own business. You need to be able to relax and not feel guilty! Finding a balance between work and relaxation has definitely helped me. I’m happier and as a result, actually more productive!
What has been the biggest highlight of your small business journey so far?
My biggest highlight would have to be taking the leap and leaving my job. I’ve been full-time self employed for a year and a half now. I work in my little home studio and I get to do what I love every day!
Thank you Emily, and we are so happy you took the leap and you create, as far as I am concerned, a product that’s essential in anyone’s life XX
