‘When The World Zigs, You Should Zag!’

Such great advice from John Hegarty on the podcast this week, but I just had to share this one here!
.
‘When the world zigs, you should zag!’
.
Something that really bothers me is how so many companies set out to do something different yet, like a moth to a flame, they become a clone of something already out there and lose their vision – caught up in the process of creating process!
.
If you want to survive in today’s economy you really must offer something of value to your customers, and this is where small becomes mighty! Not only do the corporations have lengthy processes that hinder their ability to implement new ideas, but they are also greedily competing for their market share and more!
.
Small business owners have the ability to wake up one morning and decide they want to try a new idea and turn everything on its head – sometimes that very day! They also are invested in their local community and value the connections they have with their customers and fellow business owners.
.
Small businesses are quite literally set up to ‘zag’ against the corporate ‘zig’ – it will often be the reason many of them were founded, by people who found a need unfulfilled and filled it with their creativity and passion.
.
So this is a reminder to all those small business owners out there, caught up in numbers, processes and targets – remember why you struck out alone in the first place! As John so wisely says, “go against the herd, stand by your ideas and know that different is not dangerous. The world is going to try and make you all the same, so you’ve got to fight that sense of criticism if someone says ‘ooh that’s different’ – it’s actually a great compliment! The world will look at your difference as a problem – it’s far from a problem!”
.
Happy zagging folks!
