You Can’t Wait For Hope, You Have To Be Hope

When I read the @guardian article with Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Greta Thunberg discussing The New Green Deal, activism and the challenges of being a young female voice in our current climate – I thought YES YES YES! This is exactly what we need to see, women and young people having the self-belief and resilience to drive forward real change.
.
Alexandria is the youngest woman to ever serve in Congress and Greta, at just 16 years old, has inspired worldwide climate strikes from her peers. Trust me, it’s not easy to get teenagers to turn out for something that isn’t ‘cool’ or ‘fun’. But perhaps the fact that they are turning up in itself speaks volumes??
.
Two key things the women discussed that really hit home for me were their thoughts on leadership and hope. Two things I think, women are especially well suited to!
.
Alexandria says of leadership that “people think of it as this glamorous, powerful thing. But leadership is a responsibility”. That being a leader means going first and making hard choices when you cannot determine the exact outcome, because there’s no example to follow. It’s hugely challenging and a great responsibility.
.
They dissect not only how to retain hope in what can feel a hopeless situation, but how to embody it and create hope by actually being it. And hope is contagious! It’s why I create my podcast and why we put on our events – sometimes you do have to see something to believe it and once you have belief you can act on it. Which is what Alexandria and Greta are both doing – daring to have hope and pursue new paths, despite the outdated, stale and repressed environments they’re operating in. And they are succeeding!!!
.
It’s so refreshing and encouraging to see these two incredible women, worlds apart, geographically and circumstantially, but fighting united, for a better future.
.
I will put a link to the article in stories, it’s a great read!
