Laura Holden Studio
FRome, somerset
Hi, I'm Laura Holden, a textile artist from Somerset.
I design and handmake nostalgic, vibrant textile pieces inspired by folklore and a love of vintage story books.
My aim is to make magical pieces that will become a beloved part of a homes landscape for years to come.
Each cushion is made with how it will feel to hold in mind; in soft, durable fabrics and shaped to feel wonderfully comforting against the body. I'm a great believer in the magical properties of hand stitch!

A few favourite PIECEs
I began working with textiles during my Fine Art degree, creating big spidery installations with fabric and thread. I then moved into prop and costume making for theatre and exhibitions, making some wonderful things like dragons and huge orange octopuses.
I've always loved sewing. I think there's a bit of magic in the small binding actions of stitches accumulating to make a whole.
My current practice as it is today started when my children were tiny, I would sew things that popped into my mind while they slept. As they've grown so has my business, and I'm so proud of where it is today! It's still small enough that I can hand make each piece myself, and I think that lends something special and personal to each piece. The hand stitched element gives little idiosyncrasies that make each piece individual.
I draw a lot of inspiration from storybook illustrations from the 50's to 80's. I also love reading folklore and old fairy tales, and hope to convey some of that magic and nostalgia in my work.
