Welcome to Sophie Harpley. I am an artist and designer, painting patterns by hand to create original, joyful and sustainable homeware.
Inspired by a love of nature, modernist art, antiques and travel, my work evokes vintage prints and florals reimagined. My wallpapers and fabrics are printed in Britain, using natural materials and environmentally friendly processes.
I live to make beautiful, long-lasting homewares, bridging both traditional and modern interiors with their playful artistic touch.
I grew up surrounded by bolts of cloth and swatches from Liberty and Laura Ashley, The women in my family sewed everything themselves, from clothes to curtains. Florals might just be in my DNA, but I was never much good with a needle! Painting was my thing.
Inspired by a love of pattern, colour, art history and craft, I leapt at a chance to work for The V&A Museum in my twenties. It was there, immersed in decorative arts, I realised print design could really be a vocation; a dream was forming. I went on to gain a Masters in Graphic Arts and gradually began to grow my eponymous homeware brand.
Some favourite milestones include seeing my work in British Vogue and The Royal Academy of Arts and lockdown collaborations with Rosie Birkett and Nina London. This year I won a Homes & Gardens Design Award for my new wallpaper collection, which I'm still pinching myself about.
While my business has grown over time, around a family and freelance work, my ethos has been unflinching since the start. I design and paint every print by hand, because I love a free and imperfect style. I then work closely with British mills and makers to produce homewares that stand the test of time and cause minimal impact to the environment.
I truly believe patterns are like stories and bring depth, warmth and life to the home. I hope you enjoy my work.
