Victoria Rose Richards

Plymouth, Devon

I'm Victoria and I've been sewing aerial embroidery landscapes since summer 2019. In growing up in an area of outstanding beauty, I'm inspired by the Devon countryside around me: the patchwork fields, reaching moorlands, lush woodlands and winding rivers. How many have fond memories of visiting the countryside as a child? In these idealized scenes I express a nostalgia that is both comforting and bittersweet, bringing back rose-tinted memories of simpler days past.

The story behind the business
Meet Victoria Rose Richards

I began embroidery during my final year of university in late 2018 - I'd been having autism-associated depression and mood problems for years but they increased here and I found boredom between studying to increase the issues. I wanted a new hobby to occupy my mind. I saw some embroidered landscapes online, got out my grandmother’s old tin and pulled out some greens and blues to have my first try… and then I never stopped!

I specialised in aerial view embroidery in the summer of the following year - I found the shapes and textures from above fascinating and wanted to explore those in more depth. I spend most my days sewing thousands of fluffy French knots, seed stitches and satin stitch to explore these various textures of the British countryside - creating embroidery landscapes is my full time job and it brings me great happiness and peace!
