Laura Ann Coates
Margate, KENT
Hello! My name is Laura Ann Coates and I am Margate based artist specialising in hand embroidery.
I am probably best known for my textile replicas of ephemeral objects such as receipts, tickets, and handwritten notes, which I craft entirely by hand from my cosy seaside studio. I love the idea of capturing a fleeting moment which might otherwise be forgotten, and elevating throwaway objects into precious artworks.
Many of my works are bespoke pieces created to commission for customers who are hoping to preserve memories or moments in time. My most popular requests are receipts and handwriting; I love how both provide me with a real sense of the individual, and by the time I have finished the artwork, I feel well acquainted with them!
I also love to stitch on paper in the form of cards and small artworks, exploring lighter themes and putting my illustrative skills to work. My love for handwriting continues to show up in my designs, and I often include lyrics, poems or phrases that resonate.

I was born and raised in a small village in Hertfordshire, and wanted to be an artist from childhood. My father was a former draftsman and technical illustrator and I was also inspired by my grandmother, who I would spend long afternoons painting with in her kitchen.
I studied Fine Art at Winchester School of Art from 2004-2007, with my specialism being painting. However I was always drawn to line work, and began to use embroidery as a way to convey form.
I worked through my twenties as a gallery assistant and then art consultant before returning to university to study for a Masters in Illustration. There I discovered my fascination with ephemeral objects, and began to draw and embroider tickets and receipts. My final project included drawings depicting every single receipt I had collected that year.
I continued to work in galleries and as a picture framer in London for the next decade, selling my work on the side, until the pandemic hit in 2020. After being made redundant from my gallery job, I moved to Margate and turned my full attention to my art practise. After years of promoting other artists’ work, I felt ready to focus on my own business, and began to sell at markets, pop-ups and local stores.
Thanks to a few high profile projects and features, I have been fortunate enough to sustain life as an artist ever since; most of my business coming from private clients who commission bespoke artworks.
