I am an artist living and working in County Durham, combining my passion for painting with my love of timeworn school artefacts.
Happiest in my home studio creating colourful oil paintings on old time worn objects. Inspired by timeless narratives of childhood, handstands, cartwheels, push-along toys, sports and much more, are recurring themes in my work. Matched with lively titles that resonate on many levels, my paintings bring interest and energy to any space.
Old family photographs became the inspiration for my art practice when I noticed that while fashions came and went, children’s body language remained timeless and universal.
Reflecting on how quickly children grow, and the fleeting nature of childhood, I found that old school rulers, not only echoed height charts, but also provided the perfect backdrop to narratives from childhood.
Cartwheels, handstands, push along toys and family pets have all become recurring themes within my work, and have appealed greatly to galleries and collectors of my original pieces. Encouraged by the success of my paintings on well worn graffitied rulers, I continue to explore the possibilities of other objects associated with schooldays. Chalkboards, wooden protractors, vintage board games and aged book covers offer up exciting possibilities.
