Mortlake, south london
Hi there I'm Alice Lickens and I run Mortlake Papers. I make playful eco-friendly stationery, all designed and made here in the UK.
Each design starts life as a drawing, collage or painting made by me in my studio in Mortlake, South London. The artwork is digitised so that every brush stroke, inked line and texture can be seen in the finished product.
Being sustainable is central to Mortlake Papers, our products are made of FSC recycled paper; this means that 100% of it is made from recycled materials. Our envelopes are vegan; they are made without the use of animal products, pigments or glues (including gelatine) and are made with 100% recycled materials. Our ‘cello’ bags are made of vegetable starch and are fully compostable and biodegradable, you can put them in your home compost bin or food recycling.
I’ve always been an avid sender of post, something I got from my Mum who would send me magnificent envelopes when I was away from home. The cards I make for Mortlake Papers are polished versions of the cut-at-the-kitchen-table ones I have given to family and friends. The artwork is snipped, painted, glued and scrawled by me in my crayon filled home studio.
For over a decade I've worked as an illustrator and author. In October 2022 I made my first card (a die cut polar bear) and was so pleased to get them stocked in a handful of shops across the UK. It gave me the confidence to launch Mortlake Papers the following summer. I juggle Mortlake Papers around my young children, I love that it gives me the flexibility to be around for my family.
