Venerable Beads is run by Ellis Jackson Kroese (they/them) from Manchester, UK. Inspired by folkloric and historic imagery, the designs are pulled from archival images, antique embroidery samplers, colourwork charts, and beyond.

The story behind the business
Meet Venerable Beads

Over 100,000 years ago, in a cave in North Africa, someone made a string of beads from sea shells. This string of beads is the earliest evidence we have of human self expression — twice as old as the first cave paintings. Since then, countless generations from every corner of the Earth have used beads to adorn themselves, their loved ones, and their cherished objects. Without shouting about it, beads have been an almost universal part of the human experience for millennia.

Like many before me, I came to beadwork through play and creative exploration. Over time, play became passion, experiments turned into gifts, and slowly developed into this small venture. When I work, I think of those who developed this craft and those who produced the pieces that influence them; the antique embroidery samplers, lace tablecloths, and woven tapestries. The creative DNA of these innovators runs through my work. It is an honour to be part of this tradition of jewellery making, wearing and sharing.
