Like most Vespucci Signature Hikes, this starts at a station: Durham Station. A dreamy loop through riverside Durham, perfect for hikers and history lovers. This map and guidebook details a Vespucci Signature Hike that starts at Durham Station or on Palace Green in front of Durham Cathedral. It is not a long hike but it packs a punch, leaving plenty of time to explore.
The magnificent cathedral is the linchpin of this walk, viewed from every angle. The route passes university colleges, the Durham Botanic Garden, and reminders of industrial heritage, with the River Wear as your guide. There are a couple of short, sharp climbs but the payback is worth it. Well-rated cafés are at the start, a great restaurant is near the finish, and bluebells in season create a magical atmosphere.
