Unable to find a sustainable alternative to the traditional paper Christmas cracker that still had a snap, I decided to design my own, and now with my Wonder Cracker Sewing Pattern, you can make your own too!
The Wonder Cracker sewing pattern is an 18 page booklet providing detailed instructions outlining how to make your own reusable fabric cracker, plus how to add that all-important snap. The cracker is designed to be pulled, just as you would pull a traditional paper cracker, but instead of throwing it away afterwards, it can be refilled and used again. You can even replace the snap.
The pattern booklet includes recommended fabric choices and useful advice for creating multiple crackers. And as each cracker involves stitching just a few short straight seams using a sewing machine, you don't need to be an experienced maker to give it a go.
All required pattern pieces are rectangles, the full dimensions of which are provided. Therefore please note that this sewing pattern does not include any physical pattern pieces.
MATERIALS REQUIRED PER CRACKER:
54 x 19cm main fabric - eg. quilting weight cotton; avoid heavy weight, sheer or stretch fabrics and anything that can’t be ironed.
56 x 19cm lining fabric - eg. cotton lining; avoid heavy weight, sheer or stretch fabrics and anything that can’t be ironed.
38 x 17cm very heavy weight single sided fusible buckram eg Vilene S133
100 cm ribbon - suggested width 10 - 20mm
Cracker snap
Matching thread
FINISHED CRACKER DIMENSIONS: 6.5 x 6.5 x 32cm approx.
SKILL LEVEL: Beginner/Intermediate: Each cracker involves stitching a few short straight seams using a sewing machine. A small amount of hand sewing using a simple running stitch is also required to complete each cracker. Familiarity with following a sewing pattern is helpful but not essential.
Please note that this pattern is sold for PERSONAL USE only. The pattern must not be copied, altered, reproduced or sold on without prior permission from Lucy Dorothy Nichols. Similarly crackers made using this sewing pattern should not be sold on without prior permission. By purchasing this pattern you are agreeing to these terms.

Hi, I’m Lucy and I’m lucky enough to work full time as an artist, creating marvellously magical sculptures from my treasure trove of old papers and books, maps and even the odd chocolate bar wrapper!
I love making pieces with a playful, illustrative feel and often focus on trying to make the impossible possible, be that a shop selling weather by the jar, a hotel for weary birds or even a rainbow making machine.
