Furrtastic Empurrium
Bournemouth, Dorset
Hello - I'm Emily! I love to create work that makes people laugh and smile. Furrtastic Empurrium is inspired by my strong imagination, combined with animal and people watching.
I bring to life my illustrations using stoneware fired clay. I individually hand build all of my animals; wild and domestic from my garden workshop.
My work is exhibited in galleries across the country. I also make personalised commissions, mainly of cats and dogs from photographs; sometimes with interesting requests!
My story starts with a 20 year old me, venturing on a college Art trip to Paris. We visited the famous Pere-Lachaise Cemetery, which is the final resting place for many famous Artists, writers and musicians. I was struck by the many cats that inhabited the place, which then led to a chance meeting with Jim Morrison reincarnated as a plump ginger and white cat sat on his own grave being stroked by women!
This experience fuelled my fascination for the spirit of the feline species and from then on I made cats. I graduated with a BA Hons degree in Craft, specialising in ceramics and textiles.
Fast forward to now (32 years on…) I continue to make cats but do endeavour to make other animals too and anything else that I might be able to morph from clay, fabric or paint! I draw ideas of humorous situations that are then reflected in my three dimensional work as well being produced as cards and prints.
I am based in sunny Bournemouth in my garden workshop under the watchful eyes of our family cats; Lolly and Sweetie. They are my quality control assistants; regularly padding precariously in between my drying ceramic pieces on my work bench and attempting to pack themselves into my boxes when posting out orders!
