Helena Cairns Pottery

Ashwell, Hertfordshire

My name’s Helena and I am a potter working from a studio at the end of my garden in the village of Ashwell, Hertfordshire.

I started my pottery journey at Turning Earth in London before moving to Canada, where I worked for a short while as a studio technician for the Vancouver based potter, Janaki Larsen. I have supplied my tableware to restaurants in London and Canada!

As an artist I am drawn to calm and quiet, organic tones and textiles. I hope that’s what you’ll find in my pottery.

The story behind the business
Meet Helena Cairns Pottery

Using handmade pottery connects us to the making process. A reminder of the journey from clay to finished piece.

Filling a serving platter with salad and feeling the ridges left in the clay from the fingertips that made it. Pouring coffee into a mug where the stoneware toasted a little more on one side due to its proximity to another pot in the kiln. Feeling the tracks left by a tiny speck of grit that was dragged across the surface during trimming - It is these chance happenings that drew me into and continue to keep me fascinated in handmade ceramics.

As pieces are used and loved over the years, a crack here or a chip there adds further to their story.

I hope my pieces bring their life and soul into your home as you bring yours into them.
