Jess Grimsdale
Bristol
I’m Jess, traditional signwriter, folk artist, and enamelware collector. I can be found working on signs of all kinds across the UK, and hand-painting vintage teapots in my Bristol workshop. My work is largely influenced by my time spent apprenticing at the circus and fairground during the early years of my career, and by the bright and bold designs of canal art and wagon painting. These styles bring me so much JOY and I’m so excited to bring them into your lives too!
The second I discovered signwriting back in 2018, I knew it was what I wanted to do for the rest of my life. With an Illustration degree as a base, I started building up the skill set required, and haven’t looked back since. I began with a course right by the canal side, followed by a stint at Giffords Circus, and eventually a short apprenticeship at Carters Steam Fair. It was here among the fairground rides and paint fumes that everything started to fall into place.
Since then I’ve worked on a range of projects, from boats to baubles and festivals to fascias. I was also lucky enough to receive a scholarship from QEST, which led me down a new avenue, towards teapots! Inspired by the decorative jugs and buckets found on narrowboats, these are my own take on the tradition, and I hope you love them as much as I’ve enjoyed creating them.
