Silverstick
lewes, East Sussex
Adventure is in our nature. We hear it calling in every roaring wave, whispering forest, shimmering river and brooding mountain. And the call is always the same: Life feels better out here.
That’s the founding spirit of Silverstick. We’re outdoor people making sustainable clothes purpose-built for the natural habitats we love to play in. Nestled in the South Downs national park, we created our first organic cotton clothing collection in 2010 and we’ve stuck to our sustainable philosophy ever since.
Our clothes are designed to feel comfortable and look great wherever you are. They’re rugged enough to thrive in the wild (and believe us, we put every garment through its paces). And they’re produced in tune with nature to help support and protect our beloved outdoor playgrounds.
Watching over it all is a magical bird who inspires all our clothing. The Silverstick represents the roving spirit of adventure, urging us to spread our wings.
We are very proud to say we produce our outdoor accessories from sustainable fabrics here in Britain. Our hats and socks are made from organic cotton and a wide range of natural wools including merino and alpaca. They are made with care and consideration and are better for the planet.
In 2017, we had the idea to combine British craftsmanship with sustainable fabrics to create our Made in Britain range. Setting up your own production chain from scratch is a voyage of discovery but we managed to find an organic cotton supplier from whom we were able to import our organic cotton. Wool is more readily available, so we were able to source merino, alpaca and British wool here. We tracked down a British dye house to dye the organic cotton and we located two factories, one that makes our socks and the other our hats. Finally, we found a packaging supplier who produces our recyclable cardboard packaging.
It has been an incredible experience working with our factories here in Britain. One of them was founded over a hundred years ago and now has third and fourth generations of the same family now running it. It is a privilege to be able to draw on their textile heritage and continue to support their high quality craftsmanship. Their production involves both machine making and traditional hand making to create outdoor accessories that will stand up to every outdoor test.
Making our hats and socks close to home lowers their environmental footprint, as well as building up local skills and employment in the process. Organic and natural fabrics are the core of our sustainable design. By blending the British quality standard with these eco-friendly fabrics, we are creating unique accessories to be enjoyed for years to come.
