The Grey Earl
Perthshire, Scotland
Hello there, I'm The Grey Earl (my mum still calls me Jon), an illustrator making work from my studio, in the misty hills of Scotland... how mysterious.
I make funny cards for your favourite people, all with a distinct sense of humour and a healthy dollop of nostalgia. My work tends to appeal to that ever so hard to shop for demographic, men.
When I'm not drawing pictures or thinking up jolly japes for cards, I can be found chasing after my two daughters, bouncing on our trampoline or eating ice lollies, often all at the same time.
Proudly independent
A few favourite PIECEs
I've always drawn pictures and have been busy making things for as long as I can remember. As a kid, I would fill sketch books with illustrations of airplanes and American Wrestlers, I would make space ships out of cardboard boxes and build diorama's at the family kitchen table, out of cereal packets, using bits of string and lots (and lots!) of glue. Needless to say, my mum loved my creative spirit... I think.
I'd make mad home made movies on our ginormous 1980's VHS camcorder and re-enact scenes from my favourite shows on the tele, from Robin Hood to Star Wars, though of course at the age of 8, I did them way better than the originals.
This DIY approach to play and making things has stuck with me and is the foundation of my (now very serious) career as an illustrator.
