The Tipsy Moth Pottery

Saffron walden, essex

Hi, I'm Pip!

Saffron Walden’s shed-based designer of the Tipsy Moth Pottery’s rustic, tactile and occasionally amusing ceramics! I use linocuts and hand painting to make original beautiful textured homeware.

I’m a neurodivergent, middle aged, single mother of 4. This business is mostly a labour of love and an excuse for more cake (to use as photo props of course)

The story behind the business
Meet The Tipsy Moth Pottery

I got interested in ceramics after seeing a video where a kooky Danish guy fired his pottery in a garden bin! So there I was, during Covid, experimenting and building kilns in my garden, learning all about the rules of ceramics, just so that I could break them. That’s why I handbuild all my pottery, because when ceramics started over 30,000 years ago, no one used wheels or any other new-fangled gadgets (don’t get me started on lasers in pottery) I love the thought that we can still see the fingerprints of Roman Potters today in pots excavated and stored in the London Archives. I don’t believe in mass production, or tidy symmetrical things,I like wobbly, bumpy, wonderful, gooey glazes and daft designs.
