Simnel cakes are a a traditional part of celebrating Easter and are a wonderful centre piece for your Easter table. A Simnel Cake is a light spiced fruit cake made with two layers of marzipan, one on top and one in the middle. Traditionally the cake is decorated with eleven marzipan balls, representing the 11 apostles (excluding Judas).

According to historians, the origin of the Simnel cake goes back to the custom when girls in domestic service would go home to visit their mothers on Mothering Sunday. They would bake a cake similar to the Simnel cake and decorate it with fresh flowers. This cake later became a traditional Easter cake and the eleven marzipan balls were placed on top to represent the 11 apostles (excluding Judas). Our Simnel Cake makes the perfect Mother’s Day gift and for Mother's Day we decorate it with pretty chocolate flowers and put it in our gorgeous gift box.

Home for The Simply Delicious Cake Co is amongst the gentle rolling hills of South Shropshire, just a few miles from Ludlow. The cakes started as an offshoot of Milly’s catering business, baked in the farmhouse kitchen and sold at various food festivals.
By 2002 the cakes were in full swing and sales began to grow. Before long we had grown out of our home kitchen and started converting redundant outbuildings and stables outside our back door, where the bakery still remains today.
All the cakes are handmade to our own traditional recipes, then baked in small batches, so that production can be personally supervised by Milly. Where possible, we source ingredients locally – free range eggs from the farm over the hill behind us and English butter.
Presentation is a big thing for us too. Our cake packaging is contemporary in design and we strive for the highest standard, whether the cake is eaten at home, or given away as a present. All our mail order cakes are sent out in the post in a gorgeous gift box, with our eye catching branding. And very importantly all our packaging is recyclable.
