A walking guide to modernist houses in Blackheath, South London.
The south-east London area of Blackheath, so-called as it appeared a darker colour than the green fields it overlooked beside the Thames, has long been popular with the middle classes. From the 18th century, the gradual development of quality houses began and continued into the twentieth century, particularly by Span Developments — one of England’s most important private developers in the post-war period. Their most extensive work can be found in Blackheath, as well as several individual houses by Britain’s most revered modernist architects including Peter Moro, Patrick Gwynne and Walter Greaves.
