I honestly don't know why I've ended up making a Peeled Banana Tree Topper. Saying "Why not?" feels a bit of a cop out, but it's Christmas so let's embrace the whimsical and go with that...
I honestly don't know why I've ended up making a Peeled Banana Tree Topper. Saying "Why not?" feels a bit of a cop out, but it's Christmas so let's embrace the whimsical and go with that.
When I first started making things out of string, I loved making objects of no use - a string cup, a daffodil, a string cup, an aubergine. I guess these random objects cocked a snook at the pragmatic simplicity of a market stall full of hot water bottle covers, market bags and kitchen cloths. It was only a matter of time before one of the oddities ended up on top of a Christmas tree, so if you favour bonkers over hygge charm at Christmas, then this might just be your tree topper for you.
This tree topper is made entirely by hand from cotton string and wire. The string is hand dyed, French knitted to form a hollow cord, threaded with wire and then sculpted by hand to resemble a peeled banana.
It measures approximately 20 x 15 x 25 including the coil, with the actual banana part being roughly the size of an actual banana.
To fix the topper to your tree, twist the wire coil around the leader branch. I liken it to plaiting them together rather than fixing one to the other.
I make the coil in two sizes:
Standard Coil | 1cm diameter
Will fit securely to most real Christmas trees and narrower artificial trees.
Wide Coil | 2cm in diameter
A good choice for fuller trees, especially larger artificial trees.
Please do bear in mind these items are hand made so all measurements I give are approximate.
I use Everlasto strings and twines from the James Lever Factory in Bolton, UK, where they've been manufacturing twine, cord and rope for over 150 years. Natural cotton string is intended for practical uses so slight inconsistencies in colour, flecks and blemishes are all part of the charm.
All my string "things" are plastic free. I keep marketing materials to a minimum and all packaging I use can be re-used, composted and/or widely recycled.
