Atelier Susan Bradley
York, Yorkshire
Susan creates original and innovative work with a distinctive graphic quality. Her art is created by hand printmaking - using letterpress, lino cut and mono printing techniques. Her fascination with these handmade analogue techniques and with 'slow art' drives her creative output. She loves how each piece she hand makes is absolutely unique. How each piece is made with care and attention, and how creating by hand produces what might seem like 'imperfections' in our perfect digital world (finger prints, different weights of ink and the like ) yet are actually what creates their beauty.
She combines a simple, graphic style for which she in known with either striking monochrome or rich metallics.
Her inspiration comes from inspirational poems, song lyrics, wild swimming, contemporary culture and ancient wisdoms, folklore, protest art and feminisim.

Susan established her creative career 20 years ago with her award-winning intricately cut silhouetted metal designs, for both interior and exterior spaces. Her innovative design work as a creative director encompassed furniture, interior and exterior accessories, products and lighting, and has been sold all round the world. Commissions include Yorkshire Sculpture Park, Baltic Gallery, National Maritime Museum, DKNY, Christian Louboutin, Harvey Nichols.
She took a break from her creative career to have children and to create and support a unique community for mothers and mothers-to-be. To gather, to be celebrated and for them to feel empowered as they navigate Matrescence.
She has found her way back to her creative path. Susan now works analogue and lo-fi hand carving and hand printing linocut prints and working with vintage wooden type to create striking letterpress prints. These lo-fi, handmade processes continue her distinctive graphic style yet also celebrate the imperfections of the handmade.
Susan also creates space in her studio for creative rituals which are an important and integral part of her overall creative practice now.
