This artwork inspired by Nina Simone captures a moment in time. A moment with the audience and a moment with us which feels intimate and knowing. The direct gaze of this iconic musician seems to be caught between confrontation and vulnerability, mirroring the strong stage presence Nina embodied. We notice the tilt of her neck as she leans forward, engaged both in the performance, and her relationship to the audience around her. Dazzling with gold leaf detailing, we are transported back to the 60s and reminds us of the impact and talent of this complex, remarkable creative and civil rights activist.
This is a signed and numbered limited edition of 30 giclee print based on an original ink and watercolour painting. Each edition is hand-finished with 23 carat gold leaf and printed on archival quality heavyweight canson rag paper.
It is available in 2 sizes - 42 x 59.7cm (A2) and 60 x 80 cm. The larger 60 x 80 cm print has hand-deckled paper edges.

I'm Johanna - a painter fascinated by that magical place between abstraction and representation. My portraits appear to emerge from watery depths of paint, between splashes, drips and pools – created with layers of poured paint.
Alongside a passion for experimental mark-making, I am curious about the way we look at and represent women in particular. In a world dominated by the male gaze, I'm interested in the female one, as well as strength, vulnerability and diversity.
