Fish, surfboard art is a unique and niche concept, a natural progression from painting fish on canvases which were hung alongside display surfboards giving me the idea of combining the 2 together - fish and surfboards.
Cornwall is a county big on surfing so it's easy to get broken boards for me to paint on- the shapes are perfect for depicting a fish's streamlined body or head with the added bonus of stopping the boards going to landfill.
Living on the south Cornish coast - a location and lifestyle that inspires me - I'm immersed in my environment and attracted to painting all things marine - key themes are fish and beach scenes. Being part of a fishing family there is access to fresh fish which is currently my main muse , I see it frequently so it's natural for me to want to paint them.
Drawing and observation is fundamental, I work quickly sketching and scribbling loosely with dry pastel which is where I start with a basic idea before working larger with paint focusing on texture, expressive marks and an interest in colour combinations. Sketches are always loose and free which is what I try to retain in a more structured painting, perfect for a contemporary home.
I'm passionate about creativity so I'm always interested and curious, ideas are always bubbling.
