Fiona Hamilton

bedminster, bristol

I am a multi-disciplinary printmaker based in Bristol and I have a master’s degree in printmaking from The University of the West of England. I make my work in Spike Print Studio where I print everything by hand on one of their fabulous presses. This collection of art prints and greeting cards has been inspired by my love of nature, particularly birds, and is printed using high quality specialist papers and inks including GF Smith Kraft, Gmund Gold, and Zerkell wood engraving paper.

The story behind the business
Meet Fiona Hamilton

My first degree is is Fine Art Printmaking from Canterbury and since graduation I have always made and sold artwork: from small badges and greeting cards to large screen prints and etchings. My recent master’s degree in printmaking filled in a few gaps in my knowledge, but I always love to learn more about printmaking.

Drawing is a large part of my practice and I was drawn to wood engraving by the very fine detail you can get from the hard end grain wood, it’s sometimes regarded as “drawing with light”. I learned how to screen print over 20 years ago and have created affordable artworks ever since using this versatile medium, including some of the greeting cards you see here!

My favourite press is the 1937 semi-automatic Vandercook 232P acquired by one of the Spike Print Studio founders, Peter Reddick, and one of only 11 in the world. It prints so delicately it’s also known as ‘The Gentle Giant’.
