Kettle of Fish Designs

YARM, North Yorkshire

My work is distinctive and made for homes which have a personality that develops over time and doesn't necessarily follow trends. By using vintage imagery and a rustic aesthetic, my pieces really suit homes that combine inherited pieces, random collections and secondhand finds.

Many of my materials are recycled, reclaimed, repurposed or upcycled and this enhances the distinctive character that you only get from handmade.

The story behind the business
Meet kettle of fish designs

I'm Karen Kench, the Designer/Maker behind the company. Originally from Sheffield, I now live and work in the small town of Yarm in the north-east. I’m a Fine Art graduate and have worked as a proofreader and database manager, which gives me a different perspective on design and has helped hone my eye for detail.

Kettle of Fish Designs started by accident in 2009 when I was making unusual jewellery for myself and began to get custom enquiries. My ideas developed into designs for interiors and I now have a diverse product range that includes both. I love being able to spend my days being creative and providing customers with beautiful and unusual things to suit their own style.

I’m lucky to be able to work from a home studio and workshop that combines all the space I need to design, make and photograph products.
