Saint Nicholas, who lived in the 4th century, was orphaned as a child and inherited a considerable fortune. Rather than living a life of luxury, he chose to give his wealth to those who were sick, poor, and in need.
Over time, the story and image of Saint Nicholas evolved into what we now recognise as Santa Claus. His modern commercial image was significantly shaped in the 1930s, when Coca-Cola used the character in advertising to promote its brand. He was depicted as a jolly, grandfatherly figure, dressed in a red suit trimmed with white fur—an image that helped establish Santa Claus as the familiar face of Christmas we know today.
