When he wouldn’t cut a deal with Emperor Valerian by giving up all the Pope’s gold he was sentenced to death by roasting on a gridiron, his remarks at the time “Am I done this side, turn me over and eat me” gave name to his patronage. St Lawrence is also known as the Patron Saint of Comedians… I wonder why?
