Preto E Blanco is a one-of-a-kind original artwork by Evi Antonio, combining digital painting and collage with hand-cut and glazed butterflies. The artwork was inspired by a monotone urban paste up seen in Lisbon, which inspired the black and white palette and patterned background.
It is a study of the Paper Kite butterfly (Idea leuconoe), whose distinctive black and white pattern serves as a natural warning signal to predators. The artwork captures the grouping and feeding posture of these elegant butterflies in a symmetrical arrangement.
This piece measures 50cm and features four hand-glazed and four hand-cut, three-dimensional, life-size butterflies as part of its design within a circular frame. The artwork is ready to hang.
In the natural world, this colour palette usually serves as a warning to predators “stay away, I taste horrible”
