For generations, all that could be heard from the village of Candlerise was the sound of water lapping in the river, the tweets of the birds and the gentle clip-clopping of the donkeys over the bridge. Until recently that is, when a US military base was set up only a couple of miles from the village, and now twice a day, every day, a Chinook lumbers overhead with engines so loud that poor John is having terrible trouble with his courting of the comely Emma. Every time he attempts to propose, his voice is lost amid the whirring of the chopper blades and at this rate, fears he will spend his life with no one to cook his dinners and clean his house! This will not do!
