As it’s the month of love, we got in touch with a few of our favourite small businesses to ask them about their own ‘Good Lives’ and what makes their hearts happy. This week, we spoke to another wonderful husband and wife duo; Lucy and Matt of Basil & Ford.
With a shared passion for all things handcrafted, Basil & Ford was created when their search for wedding stationery proved fruitless, so they created their own. Their love affair with screen printing began. They left ‘the big smoke’ and our jobs in the design world to embark upon a new chapter, and work for themselves.
1. What do you love most about your business?
The creative freedom to make things that we love and think others will love too. After many years in design agencies it is a treat to work to our own briefs.
2. What do you enjoy most about being your own boss(es)?
The flexibility is amazing, especially when we have a young family. We work hard but can take time out when we need to and swap roles so we both have time to do work without the kids losing out. Having the ability to balance the two at your own choosing is glorious as you’re not tied to a 9 to 5.
3. What has changed most in life since you started working for yourself?
We set up the business and at the same time we left London whilst Lucy was pregnant with our first little one, Tilly Tea Pot. We went from the fast lane in London to the country lanes in rural Lincolnshire and entered the wondrous world of self employment and parenthood at the same time. Fair to say life changed dramatically in all areas but we have never looked back.
4. As it’s February and the month of love, what’s your favourite word or phrase that makes you feel good?
Don’t sweat the small stuff.
Thanks for sharing with us, Lucy & Matt!
