Lisa Swerling’s Glass Cathedrals are a series of dioramas created over the last 20 years in California, Cape Town and now London.

The young women pass each other with a glimpse of recognition. Will they stop and make contact, or walk on never to see each other again? How many lives of others do we skim past, stranger-soul-mates, paths not taken.

The title "A Fleeting Beating of Hearts" comes from a line in the song 'January Hymn' by The Decemberists.

Need to know

Each Glass Cathedral is handmade by the artist, and individually titled, signed and dated.

Size and Scale
Box: 45.5 x 28 x 13cm (18 x 11 x 5″) | Scale of scene: 1:87
NOTE THIS GLASS CATHEDRAL IS A DIFFERENT (BIGGER) SIZE THAN OTHERS ON HOLLY & CO.

Editions and Customisation
This Glass Cathedral design in this size is an edition of 20.

Display and Care
Glass Cathedrals have a french cleat built into the top back of the frame.
They hang on a nail or French cleat (provided) on the wall, or can sit on a shelf.
They should be displayed away from direct sunlight and avoid humid conditions eg. bathrooms.
Glass can be taken out and cleaned with normal glass cleaner.

Returns
Because the artworks are custom made, we can’t accept returns except if the order is incorrect or arrives damaged.

Media
The miniature scenes are housed in white-painted wooden boxes, fronted by glass.
The model-railway figurines are painted, and at times augmented with clay, paper, and other ephemera such as specks of glitter and tiny sequins. The interiors are often layered with glitter.
Because each order is handmade, they may vary slightly from photos.

Glass Cathedrals

Tufnell park, London

I’m Lisa Swerling, an artist making miniature worlds in boxes called Glass Cathedrals. Inspired by the power of the miniature to communicate big ideas and emotions, I've spent nearly twenty years making thousands of artboxes - in Cape Town, California, and now London.

Described as "little pockets of joy", Glass Cathedrals remind us that we are all the heroes of our own stories, and that finding delight in small moments is a superpower we can turn on in the blink of an eye.
