Lisa Swerling’s Glass Cathedrals are a series of dioramas created over the last 20 years in California, Cape Town and now London.

This artwork transports you to a sparkling parallel universe - one that reflects back the best of ourselves and the world we live in.

Lisa has made hundreds of tiny protestors as part of an ongoing project called "This is What Humanity Looks Like" - miniaturising real protest signs used in marches across the world. The iconic and inimitable Carrie Fisher/Princess Leia has ended up with a box all of her own, capturing this extraordinary moment in history.

"A Woman’s Place is in the Resistance" serves as a timeless reminder that idealism, humour and a bagful of sparkles are vital ingredients in the revolution!

Need to know

Each Glass Cathedral is handmade by the artist, and individually titled, signed and dated.
They come packed in a lovely bespoke kraft box.

Size and Scale
Box: 30 x 20 x 8cm (12 x 8 x 3”) | Scale of scene: 1:87

Editions and Customisation
Glass Cathedrals are open editions, made to order.
For some designs there is optional personalisation of the gender, skin and hair colours, included in the price.

Display and Care
Glass Cathedrals have a french cleat built into the top back of the frame.
They hang on a nail or French cleat (provided) on the wall, or can sit on a shelf.
They should be displayed away from direct sunlight and avoid humid conditions eg. bathrooms.
Glass can be taken out and cleaned with normal glass cleaner.

Returns
Because the artworks are custom made, we can’t accept returns except if the order is incorrect or arrives damaged.

Media
The miniature scenes are housed in white-painted wooden boxes, fronted by glass.
The model-railway figurines are painted, and at times augmented with clay, paper, and other ephemera such as specks of glitter and tiny sequins. The interiors are often layered with glitter.
Because each order is handmade, they may vary slightly from photos.

Glass Cathedrals

Tufnell park, London

I’m Lisa Swerling, an artist making miniature worlds in boxes called Glass Cathedrals. Inspired by the power of the miniature to communicate big ideas and emotions, I've spent nearly twenty years making thousands of artboxes - in Cape Town, California, and now London.

Described as "little pockets of joy", Glass Cathedrals remind us that we are all the heroes of our own stories, and that finding delight in small moments is a superpower we can turn on in the blink of an eye.
