Last year I bought a selection of secondhand 'overglaze decals' from a studio clear out sale. Overglaze decals are full colour designs which are applied to a piece after the glaze firing and fired for a third time. They are often used on commercial wares. These designs are all from the 1960s and 1970s, and evoke a cosy, familiar feeling as I am quite sure most of us have seen them on china at Nan's or older generations homes in the past!

This mug is thrown on the potters wheel from white stoneware clay and decorated with coloured underglaze brushstrokes when leatherhard. Fired and finished with transparent glaze. Finally, I applied the overglaze decals and fired for a third time.

Need to know

Every item is entirely handmade by Emma and there will be some variations in size, shape and finish. Photos are illustrative of the handmade item you will receive. Items sold individually.

9.5-10cm tall, 10cm wide at base, 400ml-ish capacity (measurements are approximate). Gentle hand-washing recommended.

Please bear in mind that I don't know how old the physical decals are or how they have been stored before I got them. The designs are from the 60s and 70s. I have experimented to find the right firing temperature for them. They appear to be properly affixed, but I can't guarantee if they will fade or wear in time.

Hi there, I'm Emma.

I make high quality, functional ceramics that bring joy to your everyday.

My distinctive style combines beautiful, ergonomic forms that are thrown on the potters wheel with colourful hand-decorated designs inspired by vintage style, pop culture and traditional tattoos.

I use a wide variety of surface decoration techniques including sgraffito, transfers, screen-printing, stencilling and carving to imbue as much colour and happiness into my work as I possibly can.
