HOW TO HAVE A SUSTAINABLE CHRISTMAS
When I think about sustainability, I always remember the Howard Zinn quote, “We don’t have to engage in grand heroic actions to participate in the process of change. Small acts when multiplied by millions of people can transform the world.” In 2021, there are so many options available. From rented Christmas trees, to finds we can re-use or re-fill, the UK’s small businesses have put their brilliant brains to good use (again).
DIY Christmas jumper kit, by Little Beacon Textiles: The idea? You find an old jumper, customise it with these lovely festive patches then remove them and reuse them for years to come. Plus £2 from each set will be donated to the Save The Children Christmas Jumper Campaign. It’s a double gift!
Refillable crackers, by Happy Crackers: No wonder they’re happy they’re bloody gorgeous. These beautiful Liberty print fabric heirloom crackers can be used every year and not just at Christmas but other occasions too. Plus you can fill them imaginatively and make the jokes better on top.
Ho ho ho bag, by The Jacksons: Handmade from 100% locally-grown jute, these reusable cheerful bags make for a happier planet, too. It’s the skillful traditional craft workers of Southwest Bangladesh who are supported to create them with direct payment and access to health and education.
Personalised tree planting decoration, by The Drifting Bear: Give somebody the gift of a tree, planted just for them, with this ‘A Tree For Your Tree’ eco-friendly Christmas decoration. After all, research shows that planting them is the biggest and most economical way to tackle climate change.
Sustainable cards and ribbon, by Ruby & Bo: When you buy a card from Ruby & Bo, you are directly supporting and sustaining the endangered craft of papermaking in this country. Plus they say, “Our cards feed the bees, our ribbon cleans seas, and our brand plants trees.” Well that sounds good, I’m in.
Paper dreams, by The Conscious: As the home of consciously considered products, The Conscious are a great choice for your festive decs as they use 100% sustainably sourced paper to make their colourful creations.
Christmas tree rental, by London Christmas Tree Rental: These don’t often remain available for long so you’ll need to hurry but this is such a good idea for anyone who loves the wonderful scent and look of a real tree but hates the negative impact on the planet. Yay, no more post-Christmas tree graveyards!
