A single Purple Emperor butterfly printed by hand onto hand-painted Saunders Waterford 300gsm paper.

This six layer screenprint depicts one of the UK's most magnificent and protected butterflies. After a decline in numbers during the twentieth century, the Purple Emperor is now restricted to some of the larger woods in southern England where they spend much of their time in the treetops feeding on honeydew and tree sap.

Need to know

Paper size: Approx 12x12cm with hand-torn and deckle edges.

Please note that due to the subtle hand-painted background layer, each artwork is slightly different within the edition.

This artwork is sold unframed.

Hello - I’m Kath Leone, a contemporary artist and textile designer from Cape Town, South Africa.

I create limited edition screen prints inspired by nature. These are imaginative scenes and pseudo botanical compositions featuring plants, insects, animals, fungi and sea life.

Whether free-diving in Cape Town’s magical kelp forests or sketching mushrooms and mosses under a shady tree canopy in the English countryside, I am repeatedly drawn to the detailed richness of life in these varied and awe-inspiring forest environments.
