Jeff is based on my much-loved gull friend who used to appear at my window every morning when I lived in Sussex. You may have seen him on my Instagram stories - and you can find him in one of the photos I've added here. I was friends with Jeff for 7 years, he used to tap on my kitchen window throughout the day as a gentle reminder for more snacks to be put out. He ended up bringing his partner Mrs Jeff along too, who had a great talent for flying off with birdfeeders and dropping them in a nearby pub garden. I miss them both so much, but at least I have Jeff's knitted namesake to keep his legacy going. Seagulls are so smart and entertaining!

Each bird knitting kit is carefully handmade and packed by me in the Scottish Highlands, and will contain all the yarn and notions that you need to knit Big Jeff – simply add your own pair of 4mm knitting needles, a yarn darning needle and an ordinary sewing needle, and you're ready to go. No need to order all the different yarns and bits and pieces – you can sit back, relax, and start knitting straight away. It's all there for you!

Is Big Jeff suitable for beginners? Very much so. He is simply knitted flat on a pair of 4mm(UK 8/ US 6) knitting needles, making him an excellent project for an absolute beginner: no need to knit in the round. Basic skills that you need to know: stocking stitch, increasing by knitting into the front and back of a stitch (inc 1) and decreasing by knitting 2 stitches together (k2tog).

Big Jeff the gull is 17cm long, 16cm tall.
