This wall hanging depicts a chaffinch sculpture, perched on a wreath adorned with baby blue hydrangea blooms. The chaffinch is one of a kind, made from hand printed papers. Everything from his pose, to his colour palette and textures, are unique to him. I use traditional printing techniques such as monotype and screen printing to mark my recycled paper. The construction of his little body also ensures that his posture is unique to him. Everything is handmade, from his hand cut feathers that cover his body, to his wire shaped feet.

The hydrangea flowers have a mottled texture, most of them clustered to the right of the chaffinch. You will be able to notice some variation on the petals. I like to create mottled effect with the paint for my hydrangea blooms. I also add a tiny bit of metallic lustre, which adds depth and variation to the paper, making some lovely textures.

Chaffinches are one of the UK's most common birds. Our resident population is large, and many migrants from Scandinavia spend their winter here. During migration, they often travel in single sex flocks, and since the male is the most eye catching, this has given them the nickname of the 'bachelor bird'. Our residents have been found to have regional accents, with slight changes to their song, depending on where they live in the country. Isn't that lovely!

Manchester

Welcome to the paper sculpture menagerie. My name is Kate and I make handmade paper sculptures to bring cheer to your décor. Every one of my pieces is one of a kind, made from recycled 300 gsm paper (really sturdy cardstock). Each design is tested for durability, and they are varnished with a UV protective lacquer to seal their edges and protect their vibrant colours. Each sculpture is designed, individually printed, cut, assembled and embellished entirely by hand to make sure each and every one has its own unique character. Birds are my most favourite subject. I also make flowers and other wildlife. I am inspired by countryside walks and garden visitors. I often describe myself as a seasonal maker, as I can often be found at my desk making cosy pieces in the autumn and bright, cheerful blooms in the summertime. I’ve been making my sculptures for over 15 years now, and my work aims to evoke the joy I find in the great outdoors. I do hope they make you smile.
