'Japanese Soldierfish ' is a handmade linocut print, made using three hand-carved rubber stamps. The design uses three colours (pale pink, red and black), which are printed in individual layers onto the paper, making this quite a slow process. I design and print these artworks entirely by hand, with only a small printing press to give me some assistance! This linocut print is a limited edition of 20.
Linocut printmaking is a slow, traditional printmaking process, where the artist creates a printing 'block' by carving into a piece of linoleum using sharp carving tools. Ink is then rolled onto the block, and the paper is pressed on top to transfer the ink. Creating an artwork with multiple colours often requires the use of multiple lino blocks, aligning the paper carefully each time a new layer of colour is added.
Printed on A4 size paper, 210gsm Khadi cotton rag paper.
Shipped flat in a secure card-backed envelope.
Due to the hand printing process, each print is a unique item so slight variations may occur. These are not flaws. As a handmade product it is never an identical replica of the product pictured.

Hi, I’m Paul, a Graphic Designer and Linocut Printmaker based in Cardiff.
I began experimenting with lino as a medium during lockdown, and I have found that linocut printing provides me with an enjoyable contrast to my digital-based day job. My background in design influences my work, helping me to explore the possibilities of physical composition.
When I’m not working, I’ll spend as much time as I can outside — cycling, hill walking or sea swimming.
