This wheel thrown Wild Swimmer Mug is made using a Cornish stoneware clay from the clifftops of St Agnes, Cornwall. Its huggable shaped is formed on the wheel by hand and will help you recover from the chilly tides!! The blue and white aesthetic has a soft linen, lived in feel, which along with its huggable form will turn this into your favourite, go to mug.

The mugs are thrown in small batches, allowed to dry until nearly leather hard before being trimmed, handles pulled and attached before hanging out in a box overnight to make friends with each other. Then the decorating can begin. The mugs are brushed with a dark runny slip, allowed to dry a little more before the illustration is scratched into the surface using a technique called sgraffito, scratching away the dark surface to reveal the pure clay underneath. The mugs are then allowed to dry for several days (this time can vary greatly depending on the weather!) before being fired in the kiln for its first firing which is called a 'bisque' firing. The mug at this point becomes hard and solid but also extremely fragile and porous. The bisqued pottery is then submerged in a lovely satin smooth glaze before the final journey back into the kiln for the glaze firing. During the glaze firing the pots reach incredibly high temperatures and shrink and pull together to make a wonderfully strong and functional pots, in this particular case a mug. Magic!!

Need to know

Made from local Cornish stoneware clay.
Dishwasher and microwave safe.
Individually hand thrown and decorated by Laura in her studio.
Each mug measures approximately 9cm high x 10cm wide and holds roughly 400ml (a generous mug).
I don't throw using rulers and gages as this would take all the fun out of throwing for me, so all of my mugs vary a little tiny bit but I have brilliant muscle memory so they look very very similar whilst being individual... just like each and everyone of us!

Hello, I’m Laura and I make stoneware pottery inspired by my everyday life here in Cornwall. My illustrative style is often playful and humorous with a gentle nod to Cornish folklore, both historical and more contemporary. I have a little pottery shop on the Quay in the historic fishing village of Polperro where I am inspired by the fishermen, boats and tales of the sea. I’ve always lived close to the coast and you’ll often find me by the sea, either in it or on it, swimming with my wonderful group of girlfriends (all year round) or rowing in a Cornish Pilot Gig with my boys.
